If you’ve been following the news lately, you’ll have noticed that recent cases of Ebola virus have been causing a stir…
In September the World Health Organisation declared this year’s outbreak of the disease in Western Africa the most severe acute public health emergency of modern times. Since August it has earned huge media coverage and any developments – such as reported cases in the United States and Great Britain – have been closely monitored by the press.
It is worth noting that a large part of the reason Ebola has caused such devastation in African regions is due to the incapacity of the health systems in those areas to cope with such an epidemic. Nevertheless Ebola is likely to be in the press for some time now so increasing public knowledge of the virus and its effects is in the interest of avoiding mass hysteria.
The harrowing infographic below details stages of the disease from contraction through various symptoms to potential death. It’s not a very pleasant read but it’s a good place to start if you want to arm yourself with the facts.
